This perennial sunflower species is widespread over the U.S. Growing on the margins of woodlands it is wonderful to see the bright yellow glowing from the forest depths. The lance-shaped leaves are opposite and have short stems and veins on each side curving parallel to the midrib. The leaves are slightly toothed and are rough on the upper surface. The flowers are about 2 inches in diameter. The ray flowers are bright yellow and the center disk is also yellow, becoming brown when mature. Birds such as Bluejays and Thrushes love to eat the seeds after flowering so sit back and enjoy bird watching after flowering. It flowers mid July into September and is especially useful in shaded areas where it throws an intense yellow beam into the shadows of the forest like bed.
Easy to grow and spreads via the rhizomes.
Sold as two rhizomes ready to plant year round.
